Our 7th grade artists and World Cultures students are currently studying African Art. After discovering how African Masks deeply influenced Picasso’s creation of cubism, they created pencil sketches of their own cubist-style masks.
Students then used these sketches as inspiration to create an original work of art in the shape of a face mask for Conceal/Reveal, an art installation project and competition created by the RI Department of Health (RIDOH) and the Providence Art Club. According to RIDOH, “The goal of this project is twofold – first, to celebrate the importance of creativity and the healing power of the visual arts during this difficult time, and second, to encourage our friends and neighbors to wear masks in order to continue to slow the spread of covid-19 in our communities.”
